Columbia University Celebrates New, Modernized Elevators in IAB with Ceremonial First Ride

September 09, 2025

Columbia University Facilities and Operations replaced and rebuilt all four elevators in the International Affairs Building (IAB) during the summer of 2025, enhancing aesthetics and making rides more efficient.

To recognize the project’s completion, Dean Keren Yarhi-Milo of Columbia’s School of International Affairs and Public Affairs (SIPA) joined David M. Greenberg, executive vice president of Facilities and Operations; Aaliyah Khwaja, SIPA Student Association president; and other stakeholders for a ceremonial first ride in the newly upgraded elevators on September 2.

The new elevators feature a new mechanical system and exterior improvements to the elevator cabs, including new interior cabin doors, walls, flooring, ceiling, lighting, and finishes.

Most notably, the elevators now use destination dispatch technology, an algorithm that groups passengers together based on their selected floor to minimize stops during each ride. The International Affairs Building was a prime candidate for upgrading to this technology, which requires buildings have a certain number of stories and at least four elevators for the algorithm to be effective. This technology is anticipated to help reduce wait times for elevators, which will enhance quality of life for the large and diverse population that uses the building for classes, seminars and more.

The project reflects Columbia’s ongoing efforts to modernize campus infrastructure and improve the daily experience for the University community.
