We are entering summer’s first heat wave with heat indices possibly nearing 100 degrees and air quality impacts expected in the region. During these extreme conditions, there is a greater risk of electrical blackouts due to increased energy use for air conditioning. You can stay safe and help Columbia conserve energy by following these simple steps during the heat wave and throughout these hot summer months.
Similar to previous years, a significant number of projects will take place across the Morningside and Manhattanville campuses, including residence hall upgrades, façade safety repairs, grounds improvements, and more.
The annual Morningside Campus Steam Shutdown is scheduled to begin at 10:00pm on Thursday, May 16, 2024. Steam service will be restored to the Campus at approximately 11:59pm on Friday, May 17, 2024. The shutdown impacts all buildings with steam service supplied by the Central Plant at Morningside.
Columbia's academic breaks are not only looked forward to by Columbia's students, but Facilities and Operations as well. While most are away, Facilities and Operations is able to perform a wide range of work as it has a smaller impact upon a less populated campus.
Columbia Operations recognizes the importance of maintaining indoor air quality and follows the guidelines and positions of the leading industry association for building systems, ASHRAE (the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers).

Summer is a busy time for Facilities and Operations. Although construction occurs throughout the year, the summer allows Facilities and Operations to perform a wide range of campus improvements when the campus is less populated, lessening the impacts to the greater campus community.
